Army 10 Miler - Gina's Version
by Gina Welc
OK, well I enjoyed some of this race!
When I signed up for it I was hoping to do at least what I did in the Cherry
Blossom 10 Mile (92-ish) or better. This year I will have to settle for
finishing at 106-ish minutes. Between the heat and my continuous lack of
training and being sick as well as tired going into it, I was just happy to
finish.
It was HOT out...really, really HOT. The first half of the run went OK for me.
But by mile 5 I was dying...hot...dehydrated...tired. I was tired when I
started. :) I did not bring my own water - big mistake. I actually shared water
with a runner at the 3rd water stop (after mile 6) because there was none there
and I was pretty desperate. And I did not want Gatorade at the table on the
other side of the street...
I actually saw Jim Blalock at the finish line - he was waiting for Jim McTigue
to finish. Kira was there and saw me on the course - she yelled some
encouragement to me at around mile 6. I did not know it was her for sure until
later when she confirmed it. I did not see Ethan (who ran well based on the
results) or Talia (who I think also ran well) or Ron.
I dragged my kids along and they actually enjoyed it. They particularly liked
seeing the GoArmy.com sponsored NASCAR and Top
Fuel dragster and drag racing bikes (motorcycles). They have a female rider for
one of the bikes! I enjoyed the overall festivities but wished there was more
entertainment on the course.
I do plan to sign up again next year. And maybe it won't be so hot...and I won't
be sick ...or tired...and maybe I will be more prepared! Now I am going to rest
for a few weeks and try to get healthy. I will see you running later this
month!!
