Atoms 5K Saturday, May 12, 2007 was the 3rd Annual Atoms 5K, a fundraiser for the Annandale High School Boosters. Since my son attends AHS and my younger one will soon, I figured it was a good place to put my money. My older son opted not to run (even though he is on the track team) but was a course marshal instead. My younger son went with me to cheer me on. When we arrived in the morning we met up with Kira! I also ran into my dad's neighbor from across the street at the starting line and introduced myself. Congressman Tom Davis was the official race starter and he also ran the race. I beat him! The AHS band played at the start and throughout the race, which made for some nice entertainment. The starting line was on Four Year Run at the electronic sign. I run around the school quite a bit so I was pretty familiar with the streets. The course had you on Four Year Run three times with the finish taking you onto the track for about 2/3 of a lap. I started off hard, but it felt pretty slow. It was actually fast for me because my first mile was in 7:54. At mile two I was at 16-something. I couldn't believe it. Before the race I was hoping that I'd be able to break 27 minutes and at the rate I was going I figured that would be possible. I ended up finishing in 25:30 - my second fastest 5K time ever. I was pretty happy with that. After we had some post-race refreshments Patrick talked me into leaving. I wish I hadn't listed to him because it turns out I finished 10th overall for women and was 2nd out of 20 in my age group. The woman who won my age group was also the overall female finisher. The race director said they would mail me my award. Kira, who I mentioned earlier, has been recovering from one injury after another. She took 1st in her age group! Way to go Kira.
