Lower Potomac River Marathon
by: Stan Spence

It went well or as well as I expected. Bob, of course, overachieved and did a 3:51 and I did a 4:07. It was a road marathon, nothing more, nothing less. It was scenic, at least the first 11 miles or so, then it was just a long slog on the wide shoulder of a two lane road in Maryland. If you've seen one of those, you've seen 'em all. And trust me, since I grew up in Maryland I've seen 'em all. The first 11 miles though had a nice view of the water, the Potomac on one side and whatever the other body of water was ( a bay?) on the other. Plus there were nice houses and other things to look at. Bob and I started with the 5 hour folks at 7:00 so he could get back for his dance. That meant we were in the lead for most of the race until the fast 8:00 starters passed us. 2 of them passed Bob, 6 passed me. Our claim to fame is that Bob finished first among the early starters and I finished second. Another interesting little tidbit is that it started at the Harry Lundberg School of Seamanship. I had no idea it was down there. (Even though I lived in Maryland, I had never been in that part of Maryland before. As a matter of fact we had gone so far I told Bob I thought we should have driven into the Chesapeake Bay by now.) It was a very nice facility and I found out it's a training school for merchant and cruise ships. Regrettably we couldn't stay for the after race buffet. Did I mention that Bob had to get back for his dance? And the weather was fairly nice also. The wind was a bit brisk out of the north but coming back the last 7 miles or so, the wind was at our back so it got a bit warm. With only about 300 runners it was definitely not your typical big city marathon. And the only spectators were the water stop folks every couple of miles or so. All in all a good training run for the 100 miler, not sure I'd do it again however especially having to get up at 3:00 to make sure we got there in time so we could start early since, as I might have mentioned, Bob had to get back early for his dance.
