Baltimore Marathon
by Stan Spence AND Bob Gaylord

A fun time was had by all. Bob and I ran together for about the first 3 miles and then he decided he would enjoy it better if he went on ahead and find a young lady to run with, which he did. I'll let him tell you about her. I, on the other hand. felt quite comfortable running my pace and enjoying the gorgeous weather and scenery. Slowed up a bit at the end seeing that I wouldn't break 4 hours but otherwise felt quite good.

I think Stan slowed a little at the end to spend more time with all the women running the half marathon!! Stan may come across on the surface as a really nice guy, but.... And yes, I did run the rest of the way with a very cute 19 year old sophomore from Baltimore who goes to Dickinson College. She at first thought she was going to come in around 3:30 even though her goal was under 4 hours. At mile 10 we were on an 8:09 pace and knew she could not hold it. Started backing off at mile 12 and then I decided if she wanted me to, I'd just run with her and keep her going for a sub-4. Her father was cheering on the course as was her uncle. We chatted to Ben (German officer assigned to West Point, and Steve...1988 West Point grad now working sales in Baltimore, and a bucket full of other folks we'd pass or they passed us. I particularly enjoyed the one half marathon woman we were running back and forth with for about the last 5 miles who did a bit of projectile vomiting 1/4 mile from the finish. I suggested she run through it...too close to the finish line to waste time being polite...but we kept going and she didn't pass us again so I can only assume she stopped long enough to wipe her face clean for the finish picture! Beautiful day!!!
