Bay Country Century
The Bay Country Century offers four rides of 25, 50, 62 and
100 miles. The ride starts at Northern Middle School in Owings, MD. The
registration was quick and efficient. However, what was billed as "some
hills" turned out to be 62 miles of hills, many of them very challenging.
The only flat part of the entire metric century course was in North Beach
for perhaps 4-5 miles. After a while, there are so many hills that you just
forget that they are hard and just do them-- a good learning experience.
The course was well marked, the rest areas had ample quantities of good
food, the maps were accurate and it was a good, although challenging ride.
Some of the scenery was spectacular, especially in North Beach and in the
Fair Haven area. However, it is tough to truly appreciate the bay when you
are gasping at the top of a huge hill.........
Participants included Eric, Ken, Joe , Ron (who was tapering
for a half ironman tri) Jodi Pick and Ellen Katz (who both did 50 in an
impressive display. ) Hats off to Jodi who did the whole thing on a hybrid.
She developed a quick interest in owning a road bike after the race.
