Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Run This year the Cherry Blossom was held on a Sunday that we actually did NOT lose an hour of sleep the night before as we had switched to daylight savings time a couple of weeks earlier. That alone was a great way to start the race. I went to the race with my sister - she decided to drive us in and we got a decent parking space on Constitution Avenue. The walk to the starting line was no worse than walking from the Metro. The elite female runners were given a 10 minute head start. We got to see the start of their race. We then worked our way to our place in the starting line. However, the race seems to get bigger every year. It was difficult to get into our corrals - which were actually sectioned off! We started so far back that we almost missed the elite runners in the first of the two places we'd usually spot them. I ran with my sister for about a mile but since she had only recently gotten back into running I ran most of the race on my own. I was trying to run the race and break
90 minutes - or more specifically 89 minutes, which is what I ran the first
time. I came close in 92 but not close enough. The temperature was cool and it
was overcast - I thought it was great running weather. The cherry blossoms were
at their peak so the scenery was beautiful. The course was the same as in
the past years that I have run the race, but according to the website it will
probably change next year due to construction that is planned for I think Rock
Creek Parkway. If I get in to next year's race it will be fun to try a new
course. And if I do manage to break 89 minutes it will be on a different course. |
