Giant Acorn
So on Sunday October 8 Coop and I get up
early and head down to Lake Anna for the Giant Acorn Triathlon. It is part
of the Virginia Triathlon series of about 8 races-- I think Gina did the
Luray race which was the first of the series. This was the final one of the
year. We parked about a million miles away due to limited parking
(advice--if you do it get there early), but the registration went smoothly,
the tee shirt is nice, and there were adequate porta-johns (Ron, this is the
race for you).
The swim is in Lake Anna (not the
radioactive side), and was fine except for a lot of bumping and shoving
during the swim. I came out just a few feet behind Mike, much to my
surprise, and even more shocking, I zipped out of transition with my bike
while he was still changing. However, my brief lead over Mike lasted about
a mile when he sailed by me on the Softrider and quickly disappeared into
the distance. They claimed the course was "flat and fast" but it was
actually very hilly--kind of like North Springfield. It was all on country
roads, with lots of ponds, lakes, farms and small churches. I made what I
thought was a good transition and felt pretty good starting the run. The
run course was also hilly, with a half mile uphill coming just after the
half way point. As I came downhill Mike was heading uphill cursing and
muttering as he does during most races. I actually felt better running up
the hill, and there is a nice downhill into the finish, where they read off
everyone's name as they finish.
The food after was a highlight--they had
brunswick stew which is unusual but was great. Also unlimited soda, water
and gatorade. ..............and Oreos!! I would recommend it--standard
sprint distance of .75K swim, 20k bike, and 5k run.
