Lums Pond Triathlon
The Lums Pond Triathlon was held August
13, 2006 at Lums Pond State Park in Newark, Delaware. We all know how much
weather and conditions influence triathlons, and we have all suffered
through extreme heat, freezing cold, monsoon like rainstorms, massive waves,
vicious currents, etc. Well, this year Lums Pond made up for all that with
a picture perfect day. Not surprisingly, performances were good.
The race was run on their standard
course. The water was a bit too warm, but a lot better than last year's 88
degree water. It was a perfect day to bike--nice temperature, no wind,
pretty flat course. I knew I was doing ok when I was cruising along at
18-19 mph and saw that I was in a higher gear than usual. I had my best
bike average for the four Lums Pond races I have done. The run was fine and
no one was too dehydrated. I did my second best Lums Pond time ever
overall, although I was several eons behind Ron and Ethan.
Ron and I had boldly predicted that the
half mile of open water swim would do Ethan in, at least for a while.
However, he did very well, and was only about 25 seconds behind Ron and
ahead of me. I knew he was doing well on the bike course when he whizzed by
me when I was around 6.5 miles out and I worked out that even with his head
start from heat 2 he was way ahead of me. Ultimately he beat Ron by about a
minute--the young man has a bright future.
It was a great day! If weather was
always like this there would be a lot more triathletes. Congrats to Ethan
and Ron for excellent performances. it was a beautiful day, a great course,
and if you did not feel joy in competing it was time to quit.
