Meadows Park Biathlon
by Joe Kasimer Here is my belated report on the Meadows Park biathlon. I reported in around 6:30 am for a prompt and organized sign up. First pleasant surprise--great give-aways including shirt, water bottle, power gel (2), a clip to put sunglasses on your hat (ok not cool but I will give it to Bob), a container of some sort, and free pass ($3 value) to any Boca pool and a little carrying case perfect for your swim bag. so my 25 buck entry fee came back in free stuff.
It is a 9 lane pool, nice water wide lanes, swim 2 to a lane. Only
issue--temp a chilly 41 (air of course) which left everyone bundled up.
However, as there was no ice in sight I had no complaints. The water was a
toasty 81, with fog coming off it in the dawn due to the temperature
differential. We split lanes like Madeira and at 7 promptly we were off.
With no warm up, I felt a little rough, and even worse when the 11 year old
girl in the lane next to me lapped me at least 3 times and maybe more.
However, in the first (faster) heat I was not last or near it which was
good. It was cold getting out into the brisk air, but I got sneaks on and
headed out on 3.1 mile run through local streets. I went out with a young
(ok, late 30s looking younger every day) guy and we ran together for the
first mile. However, he got loosened up and gradually left me in the dust.
Like many heat races, I ran mostly alone after that although did pass some
30-ish guy who was alternating run with walk, providing a small victory for
us decrepit types over the youth of today. I rolled in with a total time of
about 47 minutes, respectable but about 10 minutes off the winners. The
second heat was sent after we finished swimming, so I did not see them swim
but no one in the second heat came in ahead of my time so I was middle of
the packish.
It was a lovely event-- much like Madeira, everyone very friendly, some
kids, well run, course well marked. I would do it again. However, they
need over 50 awards!!
