Virginia Run Triathlon
by Ethan Katz
My
race was good, but it was very hard. I got a cool new tri suit from my sponsors,
Riptide Swim and Tri, a new store that's opening. It is a two piece suit, a
sleeveless shirt and some tri shorts. The morning went very well, there was no
problems setting up my area and no sleeping through alarms. However, it was so
ridiculously cold outside the pool that when I eventually jumped in, the seventy
degree water felt warm. I felt strong on the swim, but then again, I also
couldn't feel my toes. I got 4:58 for my 250 meter swim. My first transition was
fine and I passed Ken running my bike out of the transition area. My first
transition was 2:20.5. I felt very strong on the bike and I got to see my Dad
twice on the bike (and when I saw him after the first loop he was a lot closer )
In the second loop I ran into some trouble riding up the big hill because my
shoe popped out halfway up and I had to pedal and pray as hard as I could to get
up the hill. Fortunately, on the homestretch I had the wind at my back and a
downhill. My 12 mile bike was 37 minutes flat. My second transition was terrible
because it took me like a minute to tie my shoes because I couldn't feel my
fingers. I had 1:46 for my second transition. I caught my dad after about 500
meters and started picking people off from there. I felt like I had a terrible
run but it was actually not bad, a 18:53.8 5k, the fifth fastest overall. All
those put me at 1:04:58.89 overall. That's 24th overall, 23rd among males, and
1st for 15-19 males. For my place, I got a free VA run sprint triathlon biking
jersey and a $20 gift certificate to Riptide swim and Tri. I got interviewed too
but I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if it's good. It was overall a great
day.
From Ron Katz:
"Here is the link to the highlights
video for the
Virginia Run Triathlon.
I'm sure you won't want to watch the whole video, but look who's
picture is premier on the web site. If you did watch the 13 minute
video, you would see Ron swimming, Ron lumbering across the finish
line and an interview with Ethan about being a "sponsored" athlete."
